Our Story

A classic cigar, born again

What began in 2006 as the West India Cigar Company was rebranded in 2023 as Heroes of Jamaica Cigars — a name built to carry the full weight of the island's tobacco history back onto the world map.

The company was founded by the Mekpoi and Yiadom families, whose multi-ethnic background mirrors Jamaica's own: the same "Out of Many, One People" spirit that defines the nation defines the blend in every cigar we roll.

"It has always been my rule never to smoke when asleep, and never to refrain when awake."

Today the second generation, Jamaican-African by heritage, carries the legacy forward — merging new ideas and technology with the customs passed down to them, preparing Jamaica's cigars for their next chapter on the world stage.

The Craft

Rolled the way it's always been done

Heroes of Jamaican Cigar is entirely handmade by skilled rollers using tools and methods virtually unchanged for centuries — from a small operation based in Falmouth, Trelawny.

I.

Grown

Tobacco plants are cultivated and harvested by hand in Jamaica's fertile, volcanic red soil — conditions that closely match those of Cuba, just 90 miles east.

II.

Cured & Fermented

Leaves are cured and fermented over time, allowed to mellow and develop complexity. Different varieties and ages are blended for a consistent flavor profile.

III.

Hand Rolled

Sorted leaves are rolled by hand into long-filler cigars by artisans who have honed their craft over generations, then individually inspected.

IV.

Aged

Finished cigars are aged for several months so their flavors mature fully, resulting in a rich and complex smoking experience worthy of the name.

Botanical Spotlight

Silver Tongue

Tobacco is indigenous to Jamaica, and a notable wild variety — known locally as Silver Tongue or Cow Tongue — grows in the island's fertile soil, contributing its own unique flavour and aroma to the blend. Botanically it's Nicotiana tabacum, an annual or perennial herbaceous plant in the nightshade family, traditionally smoked by locals in pipes and homemade cigarillos.

Dried, it carries a natural warm, smoky, slightly sweet scent with floral notes — a distinct combination of taste, aroma and mouthfeel that gives the Reggae Hill its character.

The Hybrid

Heroes of Jamaica Premium Cigars

Our hybrid line is grown by cross-pollinating a select Canadian tobacco varietal with the Jamaican indigenous Silver Tongue plant, sown and grown to combine the character of both into a single leaf — deepening the smoke sensation beyond what either parent plant offers alone.

Left to their own devices, our hybrid plants also cross naturally in the field — carried by wind, insects and birds — adding genetic diversity across the crop and, over time, new varieties of our own making.

Why Smoke Jamaican Cigars

Ninety miles from Cuba, in the same red earth

Tobacco is indigenous to Jamaica. A wild variety called cow tongue, or silver tongue, still grows in the island's fertile volcanic soil, once smoked in pipes by locals. Jamaica's soil conditions closely match those of Cuba, its closest neighbour — and Heroes of Jamaican Cigar uses only prized-quality tobacco cultivated exclusively on the island.

Pairing Cigars & Spirits

An old tradition, done right

Cigars and spirits have long been considered a treat best enjoyed leisurely. The right pairing, chosen for flavor, aroma and balance, elevates both.

Whiskey, patio, evening

Smooth whiskies balance the richness of a full-bodied cigar — an easy match for a quiet evening out.

Champagne, celebration

A lighter Reggae Hill or Robusto pairs well with the bright acidity of a chilled glass of champagne.

Port, brandy & beer

From pungent ports to rich brandies to a chilled beer, there's an ideal match for any palate.
